Ben Ward

Ben is currently a jazz student at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, studying under national jazz figures such as Iain Ballamy, Geoff Simkins and Alex Merritt. He is in demand as a saxophonist both in big bands and for smaller functions. Ben regularly plays tenor and baritone saxophones on the Magic of Motown UK Tour and has performed at many other events nationwide.

Ben spent the summer of 2019 studying jazz improvisation at New York University with Dr. David Shroeder and other international greats, including Joe Martin, Jay Anderson and Alan Ferber. As well as this, Ben was lucky enough to take masterclasses from members of Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band in Los Angeles, including Gordon himself and world-class saxophonists Brian Scanlon and Eric Marienthal.

Aside from jazz, Ben is passionate about musical theatre. Having played the saxophone, clarinet, flute and keyboards in over thirty productions such as 'Les Miserables', 'The Phantom of the Opera', 'Crazy for You' and 'West Side Story', Ben is well-known on the local scene. As a rehearsal pianist/accompanist, Ben is known for his versatility and reliability and often works closely with singers for audition preparation/recitals. Ben also enjoys music directing/conducting in the context of theatre.

Ben is delighted to have the privilege to direct a phenomenally talented band and share his passion with so many like-minded people!
