Steve is a professional trumpeter and outside of big bands the majority of his work is with touring theatre shows. Steve plays regularly with The Magic of Motown, The Johnny Cash Roadshow, Hello Again Neil Diamond and Let’s Hang On and has been lucky enough to tour internationally, including visits to Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, Holland and Belgium as well as the Channel Islands, Isle of Mann and the Republic of Ireland.
Steve also now works with Diane Shaw, Motown singer, playing trumpet and leading the horn section, plus up-and-coming young artist Tom Grennan who’s receiving national airplay on BBC Radio 1 and Radio 2.
Steve is passionate about all genres of music, but especially enjoys jazz and big band music. Aside from the Ben Ward Big Band, he plays lead trumpet in the Nottingham Jazz Orchestra and fronted the band until recently. He also plays with Jazz Colossus Big Band in Northampton, Symphonica (a scratch-DJ and orchestra spectacle) and function bands including Four To The Floor, The Big Entertainment Company and Sticky Morales.
Derek is a freelance musician and graphic designer.
He has recorded on trumpet with British trumpet player Steve Waterman and vocalist Jeff Hooper.
As well as “In The Groove”, he currently plays trumpet in the big bands of Steve Waterman and Jeff Hooper, the Nottingham Jazz Orchestra and the UK tour of ‘Beyond Buble’.
He runs the horn section in the European Elvis Tour and Competitions, and plays with Elvis support bands The Graceland Band and Red Alert.
He regularly plays in Theatre shows and the BBC Strictly Come Dancing tour band.
One of his logo designs for the Derek Watkins Super C Charity campaign has been worn on 'Super-C' T-shirts all over the World, and raised tens of thousands of pounds for the Sarcoma UK Cancer Charity.
